Statement from Premier Pillai on the funeral of Pope Francis
April 25, 2025
Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:
“Tomorrow, flags at the Jim Smith Building will be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset in honour of the funeral of His Holiness Pope Francis.
“Pope Francis was a spiritual leader of profound global influence. His enduring message of compassion, humility and reconciliation touched people of all faiths and backgrounds. He will be remembered for championing social justice, his advocacy for protecting the environment and his calls for greater inclusion and understanding around the world.
“His 2022 visit to Canada and formal apology for the Catholic Church’s role in the residential school system marked a significant and meaningful step forward. He acknowledged the profound harm inflicted on Indigenous Peoples, including the loss of culture, identity and the deep intergenerational trauma that continues to this day. His apology, delivered in response to Call to Action #58 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, helped open the door to renewed dialogue, reflection and healing.
“As we honour the life and legacy of Pope Francis, we are reminded of the power of empathy, accountability and reconciliation. May his words and actions continue to inspire unity and understanding in the Yukon and around the world.”
