We kick off 2025‘s National Nursing Week with a webinar devoted to celebrating nurses

A message from Monica McAlduff, Chief Executive Officer and Gary Housty, Vice President, Quality and Chief Nursing and Allied Health Officer.

National Nursing week is a time to reflect on the important role of nurses in shaping the health and well-being of the communities we serve. This year’s theme, “The Power of Nurses to Transform Health,” highlights the incredible impact that nurses have every day: at an individual level in supporting clients to heal and achieve and their wellness goals as well as within health system more broadly and across all the spaces where wellness and healing take place.

Nurses working in First Nations communities continue to lead, innovate, advocate and create spaces for transformation. Whether it is through advancing culturally safe care, addressing systemic barriers, responding to the mental health and substance use crises, strengthening primary care, or supporting the resurgence of First Nations health and wellness practices, nurses are at the forefront of change.

This week is also an opportunity to raise public awareness and to celebrate the commitment, expertise and passion that nurses bring to their practice every day. Across BC, nurses have played a critical role in supporting innovative initiatives that improve access to culturally safe care for First Nations people. This includes the 15 First Nations Primary Care Centres that are being stood up, new simulation capacities within our Continuing Education and Professional Development team, virtual services including the First Nations Virtual Doctor-of-the-Day and specialized urban primary care sites.

We raise our hands in gratitude –W̓álas ǧiáxsix̌a (thank you very much) — to nursing colleagues in all domains: practice, education, leadership, research, innovation, and advocacy. You are powerful agents of transformation, and we recognize and celebrate your unwavering dedication!

First Nations communities and leadership have always stood strong in support of nurses, and this week invites everyone to reflect on the vital contributions nurses make toward a healthier future for all.

We encourage you to take time to learn from and about nurses in the powerful nursing stories shared on our news page over the course of the next week.  Who knows, perhaps it will inspire you to start your own career path in community health nursing?

Please join us via Zoom to open this special week with Elder Lucy Barney and VP of Quality and Chief Nursing and Allied Health Officer Gary Housty on May 13, from 10 to 11 a.m. at https://fnha.zoom.us/j/65517555178.

Thank you for all you do, to inspire transformation, each and every day.

Ǧiáx̌six̌a (thank you),

Gary Housty, Vice President, Quality, Chief Nursing and Allied Health Officer, FNHA

Monica McAlduff, Chief Executive Officer
