GOLDEN LAKE – Voters acclaimed Chief Kirby Whiteduck to lead the band council of the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation for a fifth term Saturday, while all incumbents were returned.

Sherrylyn Sarazin was the only new member elected in the day-long vote that chose the council that will guide the First Nation over the next three years. Eight candidates were vying for the six council seats.

Returning to band council is Jim Meness, who led with 182 votes, Daniel Kohoko, who followed with 180 ballots, Ronald Bernard, who captured 171 votes, Jerry Lavalley, who earned 169 votes, and Cliff Meness, who garnered 162 votes. Sarazin rounded out the results with 159 votes. John Paul Kohoko and Angelina Commando were also on the ballot. Incumbent Sherry Kohoko chose not to run again.

Whiteduck, who has held office since 2003, said he was privileged that the First Nation has again put their faith in his leadership.
