Marymound Inc.: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

We wear orange on September 30th, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (also known as Orange Shirt Day), to honour the Indigenous children who were sent to residential schools in Canada for over 160 years.

The color orange comes from the story of Phyllis (Jack) Webstad, a residential school Survivor. On her first day at residential school, Phyllis wore a new orange shirt given to her by her grandmother. The school took it away, and she never got it back. That shirt became a symbol of how First Nations, Metis, and Inuit identity, culture, and self-worth were taken away from children in these schools.

Changing our logo to orange for the month of September is a way to say:
“Every Child Matters“, and to our show support, remember the Survivors, and reflect on the lasting impact of residential schools.
