This year, Bell Let’s Talk is highlighting a growing crisis: youth mental health.

The mental health of young Canadians has declined since the pandemic. They are experiencing increased social disconnection and socio-economic challenges that have worsened in recent years.

Our young people are our hope and our future. We have a collective responsibility to ensure they get the right support when they encounter difficulties.

During my cross-country mental health learning and listening tour, I met a young woman who shared her experience with receiving help from a local peer support group. She explained how this help had saved her life. Support from those who have lived experience creates a safe space for sharing and understanding.

We must also consider young people with particular needs. Indigenous youth, for example, may require help to overcome challenges related to intergenerational trauma, while also integrating traditional Indigenous knowledge into their healing process.

Mental health is as vital as physical health. Let’s listen to our young people and support the professionals who support them.
