Apr 29, 2025
Ottawa, ON – The Métis National Council (MNC) congratulates Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Liberal Party of Canada on forming government following the 2025 federal election.
“In a time of economic and societal uncertainty, Canadians are calling for collaboration and decisive leadership,” said MNC President Victoria Pruden. “We congratulate Prime Minister Carney on earning the confidence of Canadians and forming government, and we look forward to continuing our work together in full partnership on a nation-to-nation basis through the Permanent Bilateral Mechanism.”
The MNC calls on all parties to place Métis, First Nations, and Inuit rights and interests at the forefront as they set the agenda for the upcoming parliamentary session.
“With this new government, we know that cooperation will be essential,” President Pruden added. “We call on all Members of Parliament, regardless of party affiliation, to support the path to Métis self-government treaty implementation. We also call on parliamentarians to work in partnership with the MNC to co-develop policy and legislation in areas such as Métis health and wellness, economic development, education, climate leadership, and housing.”
“The MNC is ready to build on past progress we’ve made and co-develop solutions that honour our contributions while securing a shared, sustainable future for Métis and all Canadians,” added President Pruden. “We are eager to meet with Prime Minister Carney at the earliest opportunity to set the agenda and begin our important work together.”
