MNO releases report on Métis Mental Health before and during COVID-19
May 9, 2025
The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) is pleased to announce the release of a comprehensive study on the mental health and wellness of Métis citizens before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This “What We Heard” report offers a unique, Métis-specific perspective on the mental health challenges faced by community members during this unprecedented global crisis.
The report is the result of extensive research, including input from MNO citizens who participated in sharing circles and one-on-one interviews throughout Fall 2022 and Winter 2023.
The study focused on two primary goals:
- Gathering personal stories from MNO citizens about their mental health challenges during the pandemic through sharing circles and interviews.
- Looking at service use trends from 2017 to 2022 using OHIP data on mental health and addiction services.
The combination of qualitative and quantitative data provided a deep understanding of the mental wellness of Métis citizens before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Key Findings:
- Emotional impact of the pandemic: Many participants shared feelings of frustration, fear, and being overwhelmed due to the rapid spread of the virus, lockdowns, and economic disruptions.
- Challenges to services: Participants noted how the pandemic disrupted access to health services, exacerbating existing challenges within Métis communities.
- Importance of kinship networks: The critical role of family and community connections for wellness was underscored, with many reporting disruptions to these vital relationships.
- Wholistic wellness: Métis wellness was described as encompassing cultural, emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual health, with many participants reflecting on the interconnectedness of these aspects.
Analysis of OHIP data showed a 13% increase in the use of mental health and addiction services during the pandemic compared to before. Women were more likely than men to access these services, and older Métis citizens (65 and up) sought support more often than younger citizens.
The findings highlight the need for ongoing mental health support and culturally relevant wellness programs for Métis communities. The report calls for more funding for Métis-led mental health services to better meet the unique needs of Métis citizens and to ensure future public health responses include community-based, culturally informed care.
The MNO research team extends heartfelt thanks to the individuals who shared their personal experiences and insights. Your stories have been invaluable in understanding the impact of the pandemic, and in shaping the future of Métis-specific mental wellness programs in Ontario.
