National Child Day 2024
November 18, 2024
On November 20, the Department of Education invites Nunavummiut to wear something blue for National Child Day.
National Child Day recognizes Canada’s commitment to respecting and supporting the rights of children and youth. This day is marked by two significant events: the 1959 signing of the United Nations (UN) Declaration of the Rights of the Child and the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.
When Canada ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1991, followed by Nunavut, it made a commitment to ensure that all children and youth are treated with dignity and respect. This commitment includes several key rights for children and youth:
- The right to have a voice and to be heard.
- The right to be involved in decisions affecting them.
- The right to be protected from harm.
- The right to have their basic needs met.
- The right to have every opportunity to reach their full potential.
Join us on this National Child Day as we acknowledge and celebrate children and youth as active, valued, and capable citizens in our communities.
