National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Statement

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation serves as a solemn reminder of the injustices, pain, and suffering endured by our people at the hands of the residential school system. It’s a day of reflection and remembrance of those who survived, and the many families who continue to struggle with the lasting impacts of this sad chapter in our history as a people.

Residential schools were intended to be places of learning, but they also stripped us of our culture, our language and our identity. The memories of these institutions are a testament to the strength and resilience of survivors, whose stories remind us of the importance of achieving reconciliation.

Despite the efforts to erase our identity, our culture and our language endured – a reflection of our resilience, our strength, and our determination to hold onto who we are. We are proud to be Labrador Inuit. We are proud of our traditions, our stories, and our connection to the land and each other.

As we mark this day, let us stand together with survivors and with their families. Let us renew our commitment to truth, healing, and reconciliation, and work toward a future where the rights, culture, and identity of Labrador Inuit are upheld, respected, and celebrated.
