Premier P.J. Akeeagok released the following statement in response to the federal government’s commitment to the Iqaluit hydroelectric project:

“This announcement marks an important milestone for Nunavut and for Canada. I welcome Prime Minister Carney’s commitment to include the Iqaluit hydroelectric project among the nation-building projects supported by the Major Projects Office.

This decision recognizes what Nunavummiut have long known: that investing in Nunavut’s infrastructure is essential to Canada’s strength, sustainability and sovereignty in the Arctic. The Iqaluit hydroelectric project is a transformative investment that will replace costly and polluting diesel generation with clean, renewable energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, stabilizing power costs, and creating long-term benefits for our communities.

I want to thank Prime Minister Carney and the Government of Canada for their partnership and acknowledge Minister Rebecca Alty for her leadership in championing Canada’s Arctic. I also extend my gratitude to the Qikiqtaaluk Corporation, the Qikiqtani Inuit Association, the Qulliq Energy Corporation, and Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated for their collaboration and shared vision in advancing this project and in championing Nunavut’s broader nation-building agenda.

This announcement reflects the spirit of our Katujjiluta mandate to build homes, strengthen communities, and grow a sustainable economy. It also aligns with our shared arctic sovereignty and security strategy, developed in partnership with Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, which recognizes that true sovereignty in the North depends on strong, sustainable and self-reliant communities.

As we look to the future, I am hopeful that this same federal commitment will extend to Nunavut’s other nation-building projects jointly advanced by the Government of Nunavut and NTI, including the Grays Bay Road and Port, the Kivalliq Hydro-Fibre Link, and the Qikiqtarjuaq Deep Sea Port. Together, these projects represent the foundation of a more connected and secure Arctic for all Canadians.

As my time as premier comes to an end, I want to express my deep gratitude to our partners in the Government of Canada for their continued collaboration and shared commitment to Nunavut’s growth. I am confident that this partnership will remain strong under the leadership of the seventh assembly and the incoming premier and cabinet.”
