Premier R.J. Simpson responds to the results of the 2025 Federal Election
April 29, 2025
Northwest Territories Premier R.J. Simpson issued the following statement today on the results of the 2025 Federal Election:
“I extend my sincere congratulations to Mark Carney on his election as Prime Minister of Canada. Born in Fort Smith, he shares a connection to the Northwest Territories — a territory whose leadership and potential have never been more important to Canada’s future. I look forward to building a strong and productive partnership focused on unlocking the full potential of the North for the benefit of all Canadians.
“I also want to congratulate Rebecca Alty on her election as the Member of Parliament for the Northwest Territories. As a proud Northerner, she brings a deep understanding of the territory’s people, challenges, and opportunities. I look forward to working with her to deliver results for Northerners in Ottawa.
“I would like to recognize and thank Michael McLeod for his years of dedicated service to the people of the Northwest Territories. His work in Parliament helped advance important priorities for Northerners, and I wish him all the best in his retirement and time with his family.
“The Northwest Territories stands ready to lead — securing Canada’s Arctic sovereignty, advancing critical minerals development, building critical infrastructure, and driving sustainable economic growth.
We are focused on securing investments in housing, infrastructure, and climate resilience; strengthening Indigenous partnerships and economic opportunities; and protecting and growing the future of Canada’s Arctic and North. Achieving these goals will require strong partnership and real action, and the Government of the Northwest Territories is committed to working closely with the Prime Minister, our Member of Parliament, Indigenous governments, communities, NGOs, and businesses to build a stronger, more resilient North — not just for Northerners, but for the future of Canada itself.
“I look forward to meeting with Prime Minister Carney and MP Alty in the coming weeks to begin the work ahead — ensuring that Northerners are full partners in shaping Canada’s future.”
