The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is advising the public that planned maintenance work by NorthwesTel will temporarily impact all voice, internet, and cellular services – including 9-1-1 – in Kakisa, Enterprise, Fort Resolution, Fort Smith, and Hay River. This work is scheduled between 12:00 a.m. and
6:00 a.m. from October 22 to 25, 2024.

NorthwesTel advises that technicians will be conducting maintenance work on their network in the South Slave Region to remove temporary fibre optic cables installed in response to wildfires and replace them with permanent infrastructure.

While this work is essential for long-term service reliability, it will temporarily disrupt network access – including 9-1-1 service – for up to two hours each night.

The GNWT advises residents to prepare for potential service outages during this time. If your phone remains operational, you should still be able to reach 9-1-1. If it is not, you can contact the local RCMP detachment directly or go to the nearest RCMP station.

For health emergencies, if you are unable to reach local health clinics or hospitals by phone, please proceed directly to the nearest health facility. For non-emergencies, you can call
8-1-1 to speak with a registered nurse.

For more information and updates, please visit the GNWT’s Public Safety page.
