Dilico Anishinabek Family Care is proud to launch the 2024 Step Up Campaign, an annual initiative that encourages communities to come together in support of children and youth. Now in its 14th year, Step Up aims to raise awareness about the important role that communities play in fostering the well-being, happiness, and safety of young people. The campaign runs throughout the month of October, with the main event, Dress Purple Day, being held on October 25, where the public is invited to wear purple in support of children and youth. This year’s campaign brings back the Step Up Kids Awards and extends nominations to children from JK to Grade 10.

The awards will spotlight ten exceptional kids from across the District of Thunder Bay that have demonstrated kindness, leadership, initiative, or creativity in making a difference in their community. The awards serve as a platform to recognize and amplify the stories of young leaders, helpers, changemakers, and dreamers, who are contributing in their own way. “This isn’t your traditional awards— it’s not just about academics or sports. If you know a child or youth that is awesome at helping others,
being a great friend, or sharing their culture, we want to know their story. Teachers, parents, and friends can nominate a child who’s making a difference in their community,” says John Dixon, Dilico Anishinabek Family Care, Associate Executive Director.

“By honouring children and youth with the Step Up Kids Awards, the campaign aims to do more than just celebrate achievements—we hope to build confidence and self-worth. Children who feel supported and valued by their community are more likely to make healthy choices, communicate openly, and seek help when they need it,” continues Dixon. “Recognizing diverse efforts on such a big platform through the Step Up Kids Awards not only boosts self-esteem but also helps create a sense of safety and emotional security that empowers kids in the community to face life’s challenges.”

It’s easy to participate in the 2024 Step Up campaign:
1. Wear purple on October 25th for #DressPurpleDay. It’s more than just a colour, it’s a symbol of support.
2. Nominate a child or youth who’s making a difference for the Step Up Kids Awards: dilico.com/stepup. Nominations close on November 1st.
3. Support children by volunteering, mentoring, or offering a helping hand in your community.

“Empowering children and youth is a shared responsibility,” says Vanessa McLaughlin, Dilico Anishinabek Family Care, Director of Child Welfare. “The Step Up Campaign and the Step Up Kids Awards are about showing young people that their actions matter and that their community sees and supports them. When kids feel confident and valued, they’re more resilient and better equipped to stay safe and make positive choices.”

In a special highlight for 2024, the campaign will also reflect on past award recipients from 2018 and 2016, showing how their lives have evolved. A series of “then-and-now” stories will be featured across digital and traditional media, symbolizing the impact of community support on their growth and achievements.

The Step Up Kids Awards will be recognized at the Dilico Pow Wow in November. Each recipient will take part in a photo shoot, be included in a community poster series, and receive an incredible Step Up prize pack.
