Suncor Energy Invests More than $11.2 Million in Charitable and Non-profit Groups

Calgary, Alberta (February 7, 2007) – Suncor Energy today announced it invested a record $11.2 million in more than 900 charitable organizations and non-profit groups in 2006. More than $8 million of that total was invested through the Suncor Energy Foundation, which receives Suncor’s contributions and supports charitable organizations in Canada. An additional $3.2 million was invested by different Suncor businesses through cash and in-kind contributions“As a sustainable energy company, we believe it’s essential to give back to our communities by sharing the benefits of our growth,” says Sue Lee, Suncor’s senior vice president of human resources and communications, and president of the Suncor Energy Foundation. “We continue to foster invaluable relationships by encouraging employee community-mindedness and involvement, and creating vibrant, healthy places for employees, retirees and neighbours to live.”

Suncor’s and the Suncor Energy Foundation’s investments in 2006 were focused in three priority areas:

– $5.7 million for community projects, including programs that support Aboriginal initiatives and the charitable contributions of Suncor’s employees
– $3.7 million for educational programs, specifically in skilled trades, science and technology
– $1.8 million for environmental initiatives

BACKGROUNDER: Suncor Energy 2006 community investment highlights

Suncor Energy’s and the Suncor Energy Foundation’s community investments in 2006 included the following projects:

Community:

– $250,000 to the Fort McMurray Northern Lights Regional Health Foundation’s campaign for a MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) – the first MRI unit in this health region.
– $150,000 over three years to Leadership Wood Buffalo in Fort McMurray, a program aimed at training new community leaders. In addition to enhancing community leadership, the program also builds leadership capacity in government, non-profit and private sector roles.
– $175,000 as part of a two-year commitment of $350,000 to STAR’s Vision Critical Campaign, and in celebration of the opening of the new STARS air medical rescue base in Grand Prairie, AB. The base will serve to enhance pre-hospital care in rural regions where Suncor operates.
– $10,000 to Commerce City Community Health Services in Colorado, a non-profit organization that provides free and low-cost health care services to low-income families. Suncor’s donation helps the health center continue to provide the much-needed primary and preventive health services to the children in the community.
– $340,000 in community service grants recognizing the volunteer efforts of Suncor’s employees and retirees.
– The Foundation and Suncor employees also jointly contributed more than $2 million for United Way campaigns in communities where Suncor operates, including Calgary, Edmonton, Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, Sarnia, Toronto and Denver.

Education:

– $75,000 to support ACTUA science day camps to Aboriginal youth in their communities in Alberta, northeastern B.C. and southern Ontario. This national charitable organization provides young Canadians of all backgrounds with positive, hands-on learning experiences in science, technology and engineering.
– An annual $100,000 investment in the Process/ Power Operator Program at Keyano College in Fort McMurray, AB allowing for increased student capacity, plus the gift of a surplus boiler, which will allow students to get accredited ‘steam’ time in the classroom.
– $20,000 to support the Process Technology program at the Red Rocks Community College in Colorado. The program provides training in a variety of fields including petroleum refining.
– $50,000 in scholarships through the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation for students studying engineering, science or business in Canada.

Environment:

– $600,000 over three years to the RiverWatch Science Education Program in Alberta, which encourages students to affect a positive change in water quality and conservation by modifying their personal behaviors. Foundation funding in 2005 generated a 33% increase in student participation in Alberta in 2006.
– $89,000 over three years to Project Webfoot, a national wetland and environmental education program run by Ducks Unlimited Canada. This money will allow approximately 2,000 Grade 5 students from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo to participate in an enhanced wetland ecosystem study at Suncor’s Crane Lake reclamation area.
– $50,000 toward the extension of the St. Clair River Trail in Sarnia, Ontario in support of the rehabilitation and conservation of natural habitat as well as recreational use. This contribution was made in recognition of Suncor’s opening of our new ethanol plant in September 2006.
– $10,000 to the continuous improvement of the Sand Creek Regional Greenway near Commerce City, Colorado. This investment supports rehabilitation and conservation of natural habitat as well as recreational use.
