Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg – Today the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) walks alongside the family of Ashlee Christine Shingoose, whose identity as Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe, Buffalo Woman, was confirmed by the Winnipeg Police Service.
A devoted mother, daughter, sister, and auntie from St. Theresa Point Anishinew Nation, Ashlee came to Winnipeg seeking a better life. Since her disappearance in March 2022, her family has endured the pain of uncertainty. Today’s confirmation is a step forward in their journey to bring her home.
Ashlee’s parents, Theresa and Albert Shingoose, unable to attend the police press conference due to weather, shared an urgent message through Chief Raymond Flett:
“Please start the search as soon as possible. It’s been a long time waiting. I need to bring her home. I need that closure; it’s been too long.”
No family should have to fight for two years to prove not only their daughters name but that her life matters. Yet First Nations families are forced to grieve while demanding dignity and justice.
“This tragedy is part of a pattern of violence against First Nations women, girls and Two-Spirit people” said Grand Chief Kyra Wilson. “AMC supports the Shingoose family and the immediate search of the Brady Landfill. We must bring Ashlee home.”
Today, Premier Wab Kinew and Police Chief Gene Bowers committed to searching the Brady Landfill and working alongside families, government and Indigenous leadership to bring Ashlee home. AMC welcomes the Premier’s assurance that the search at Prairie Green Landfill will continue, ensuring that all families impacted receive the justice they deserve.
“I want to thank Premier Kinew, Mayor Scott Gillingham and Chief Gene Bowers for their commitment to families. Today we recognize the strength, love and resilience that bind us together as First Nations people. Kindness and compassion for our relatives got us here and supporting families will continue to bring our relatives’ home.”.
AMC stands with the Shingoose family in their call to begin the Brady Landfill search without delay.
