The First Nations Information Governance Centre now accepting applications for 2013 National Post-Secondary Student Bursary

July 12, 2013 (Ottawa, ON) — The First Nations Information Governance Centre (FNIGC) and its Board of Directors is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for First Nation post-secondary students: the FNIGC 2013 National Post-Secondary Student Bursary. 

The FNIGC is awarding two (2) $1,000 bursaries for the 2013 – 2014 school year to First Nation students pursuing degrees in the field of epidemiology, population health, statistics, or information management technology. The deadline for applications is Monday, August 19, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. EST. 

The FNIGC is a First Nations organization mandated to serve the information, research and training needs of First Nations. As Canada’s premier source of information about First Nations people living on reserve and in northern communities, FNIGC is committed to improving the health and well-being of people living in our 633 First Nations communities across the country. 

FNIGC recognizes that real change can come through sound policy-making, but only if it’s supported by quality information — information that is collected by First Nations people for First Nations people.

Guidelines 

Eligible First Nation post-secondary students must complete an application (see below) and submit two (2) 300-word essays on topics chosen from the list below: 

  1. The First Nations Principles of Ownership, Control, Access and Possession are fundamental foundations for the work undertaken at the FNIGC. Please discuss how OCAP™ will apply to the work that you will pursue in your planned professional career.
  2. Please describe how credible data can be beneficial to a First Nations community for service delivery planning and evaluation. Use specific examples.
  3. Please discuss the term “building capacity development” in First Nations Communities. Provide examples.
  4. Please discuss why cultural connectedness is so important for First Nations health and well-being.
  5. What does the term “information governance” mean to you as a First Nations person? 

Essays must be double-spaced, on 8 ½” by 11” format and compatible with Microsoft Word.

Essays and applications can be submitted electronically (via email to lcheechoo@fnigc.ca) or in hard-copy, to the address below. 

  • Completed application packages must be received by Monday, August 19, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. EST.
  • All fields on the application form must be completed in order for applications to be accepted.
  • Scholarship winners will be announced by September 20th, 2013 and posted on FNIGC’s website. 
  • Applications are subject to verification for eligibility.
  • By submitting an application the winner consents to the use of his/her name and address (City/First Nation only) and a recent photograph in any related publicity.
  • Previous FNIGC scholarship/bursary recipients are not eligible to apply.

Who can apply for the Bursary?

Any First Nations citizen/member who is currently enrolled in college or university in a  full- or part-time capacity, and is pursuing a degree in the field of epidemiology, population health, statistics or information management technology.   

What is the award?

Two (2) recipients will receive a monetary award of $1,000.00 (One Thousand Dollars). 

What is the deadline for submitting an application?

The deadline is 4:00 p.m. EST, Monday, August 19, 2013. Applications can be made via email, regular mail, fax, courier delivery or in person.
