Vermette, Morse nominated for Governor-General’s Award – Winnipeg Free Press

Winnipeg writer Katherena Vermette has been nominated for the Governor General’s Literary Awards for Fiction for her novel, The Break.

Vermette’s book is one of five nominees in the fiction category, announced Tuesday morning. As well, Winnipeger Garry Thomas Morse was nominated in the poetry category for Prairie Harbour.

Vermette’s novel follows four generations of an indigenous family after one member is victimized by a violent sexual assault. Her book of poetry, North End Love Songs, won the Governor General’s Award for Poetry in 2013.

Other nominees in the fiction category are Gary Barwin for Yiddish for Pirates, Anosh Irani for The Parcel, Kerry Lee Powell for Willem de Kooning’s Paintbrush, and Madeleine Thien for Do Not Say We Have Nothing.

Winners will be announced Oct. 25. Each winner receives $25,000.
