Funding Available for Ikur’raq Cabins
January 21, 2025
With funding from Infrastructure and Communities Canada, the Department of Family Services has allocated $1 million under the Unsheltered Homelessness and Encampment Initiative to support the construction of community Ikur’raq cabins as part of our suite of homelessness relief programs.
This program was developed at the Nunavut Roundtable for Poverty Reduction in collaboration with Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. and community representatives. Ikur’raq cabins would be a space where people can go for respite from the stresses created by overcrowding and homelessness.
The Department will provide grants up to $50,000 to non-profit societies, HTOs, municipalities, or businesses for materials, labour, and costs associated with building the cabins.
The goal of the Ikur’raq model is to provide homelessness relief, to support and maintain healthy homes, and to prevent homelessness.
For additional information on Ikur’raq funding, please contact nrpr@gov.nu.ca or 867-899-7302, or visit the Government of Nunavut website.
