New Associate Judge Appointed to the Superior Court of Justice

The Ontario government is pleased to announce the appointment of a new associate judge appointed to the Superior Court of Justice, effective January 30, 2025.

Associate Justice Imran E. Kamal was called to the bar in September 2013. By articling at a full-service firm, he started his career gaining experience in various areas of law including family law, real estate law, civil litigation and estate administration law. Justice Kamal then focused on family law in Halton Region before becoming legal counsel at the Catholic Children’s Aid Society of Hamilton in 2014. He regularly appeared before the Superior Court of Justice in child protection proceedings. In 2021, Justice Kamal joined the Crown Law Office – Civil at the Ministry of the Attorney General, where his practice focused on Indigenous reconciliation as well as matters protecting children in civil litigation proceedings.

Justice Kamal received his Masters of Law (LLM) in Constitutional Law with a focus on Indigenous rights from Osgoode Hall. He has been active in the legal community, mentoring students and young lawyers, speaking at conferences and publishing legal articles. He has been recognized with awards and recognitions from the legal community. Justice Kamal has been a lecturer at Toronto Metropolitan University since 2022 where he created the Children and the Law course. He also co-developed the curriculum for the Family Legal Services Provider program for the Law Society of Ontario and Fanshawe College.

Justice Kamal has extensive volunteer experience. In 2017, he founded Hamilton Lawyers Feed the Hungry, bringing together volunteers from the legal community to financially support and prepare and serve meals for children and youth. Most recently, he has been on the board of directors for Mission Services of Hamilton. He co-founded the Indigenous Child Welfare Collaborative in Hamilton and has led the creation of the specialized Indigenous Child Welfare Healing Conference within the Superior Court of Justice. Justice Kamal is also a board member for the South Asian Bar Association of Toronto, the Ontario Bar Association and the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, Ontario.

Chief Justice Geoffrey B. Morawetz has assigned Associate Justice Kamal to Ottawa.
